BEAVERCREEK — Thousands of people see his company’s work each day, but few know his name.
Bill Butt, president of Butt Construction Co., has his office within miles of a few of his masterpieces.
His firm recently renovated the Student Union building at Wright State University. The company is doing a makeover at the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas in Dayton. The company has handled numerous, multimillion dollar projects at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, including the base fitness center, child development center and other buildings.
Butt credits his employees for the company’s success.
“Everyone is very important to the firm and to our success,” he said. “We have a huge number of applicants because of the residential construction downturn.”
The firm also has multiple positions for college students, and has had interns from the University of Dayton, University of Cincinnati, Ohio State and Purdue universities.
Butt Construction handles new construction, as well as renovations and additions. Projects have included retail stores, office buildings, factories, education facilities, hospitals and other high-technology structures, he said.
“There are a lot more renovations and additions going on in the world today,” Butt said.
He first worked as a retail buyer before his father recruited him to the construction firm. When he isn’t working, he enjoys fly fishing and golf. His office bears signs of his passion for fly fishing, including two carved fish on his desk and a picture on the wall.
Butt has recruited his son, Ian, to work for the firm. He keeps a clay image of Ian’s childhood handprint on his desk, which is surrounded by family photos, including his wife and daughter.
Butt is not without a sense of humor, like when he tells the history of the company’s name. The firm started as George W. Timmons Construction in Columbus. Bill’s father was hired for the Beavercreek office, so the firm was Timmons & Butt. They added a third partner, and the firm was Timmons, Butt & Head. Timmons retired, leaving it Butt & Head.
Wright State University soccer players asked the company to sponsor the team, and sported the name on their jerseys. Eventually, the company split, leaving Butt Construction, he said.
Butt Construction Co. is located at 3858 Colonel Glenn Highway.
