We recently learned from the Ohio Department of Education that our Student Nutrition Department has once again earned the Stellar Award for best nutrition practices for our 2010-11 program year. Our score was 94.5 percent. We are very happy to provide safe and nutritious meals coupled with reliable and creative nutrition education for the students of Beavercreek. Kudos goes to all the members of this department as they do a phenomenal job providing nutritional meals to our district’s students.

In other news:

• Last Saturday, our girls cross country team took third overall and second in the division at the GWOC meet in Fairborn. The boys team took second as all top seven runners came in under 17:01. Both of these teams look to do well at this week’s district meet at the Miami Valley CTC.

• Last month, Parkwood and Main elementary schools have hosted 5K races for worthy causes.

• Remember to mark on your calendars that Fairbrook Elementary will be hosting its second annual 5K on Oct. 29. Since it is so close to Halloween, costumes can be worn.

• There’s something new cooking up at BHS. Seniors Michelle Scott and Khalyani Sankar recently started a cooking club called Leaders in the Kitchen. Every other Friday, this pair leads a group of two dozen high school students as they explore the world of healthy cooking. All recipes are vegetarian or vegan, and the girls teach students how to make healthy and delicious recipes. The group is compiling a list of recipes created this year, and will put together a cookbook at the end of the year for all members of the club to keep.

• Former Beavercreek basketball star Mikaela Ruef will be playing with her current team, the Stanford Cardinals in the area this Thanksgiving break. The game is on Nov. 25 and it will be played on the Xavier University campus at 1 p.m.

• Beavercreek Schools are on the November ballot with a critical 6.7-mill emergency operating levy. Just how important is this levy to our students and community? The answer may surprise you.

Beavercreek Schools will have to go on the ballot again if this levy does not pass. Ohio’s school funding model leaves us with no choice. Despite two rounds of budget cuts that will save $12 million during the next three years, our district still faces a significant operating deficit. Why? It’s been eight years since our last voted operating increase, and during that time, our district experienced sustained enrollment growth and rising operational costs. Add in the recent 28 percent cut in state funding, and it’s easy to see that the situation is serious.

We cannot reduce the millage again. Should the levy fail, the district would be unable to collect any additional tax revenue for the 2012 calendar year.

Beavercreek Schools’ employees realize the gravity of the situation, and have stepped up to the plate. All district employees took a two-year wage reduction, and pay an increased share of health insurance premiums and co-pays.

Nick Verhoff is superintendent of Beavercreek City Schools.
