‘Home for the Holidays’ events kick off the season

Staff Report 5:49 PM Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Centerville will ring in the holidays with two big events Nov. 22.

The seventh annual Hometown Holiday Walk is from 1 to 5 p.m., with participating merchants near Main and Franklin streets celebrating the “Home For The Holidays” theme.

Santa will greet children at Panera Bread, while Routsong Funeral Home and Unique Celebrations will host entertainment — the McGovern Irish Dancers, Mr. M. the Musicmaker and his Big Toy Box, the Centerville Community Chorus and the Centerville Community Band.

Heart of Centerville businesses will be open, and are offering a gift basket raffle. Pick up a passport at Town Hall Theatre, get it stamped at six sites and turn it in for a chance to win one of three themed baskets at the end of the day.

Centerville Noon Optimists will be showcasing Christmas trees and holiday greenery in the parking lot of Square One Salon, and the Centerville Washington Twp. Historical Society will offer horse and buggy rides down Main Street from 2 to 5 p.m.

Centerville elementary school choruses will be performing at Cline Auditorium on Virginia Ave. from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

When the Hometown Holiday Walk ends, the annual tree lighting ceremony begins at Benham’s Grove, 166 N. Main St. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m., with performances by the Centerville Community Band and the Normandy Elementary fifth-grade chorus. After an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus, Centerville Mayor Mark Kingseed will light the tree.

Visitors can tour the adjacent Gerber House and see the holiday decorations.
