UNION — The cities of Union and Clayton will join forces to combat winter driving hazards this coming winter.
At the June 13 meeting of Union City Council, Union city Manager John Applegate informed Council members that Union and Clayton had reached an agreement to help clear snow and ice from Sweet Potato Ridge Road.
“People don’t realize that Sweet Potato Ridge Road is in the city of Clayton,” Applegate said.
Applegate said he was approached by Clayton City Council member G. Malcolm Treon several weeks ago about a joint venture, whereby Union clears the road since it is so close to the Union city limits, and Clayton reimburses Union for salt usage.
Applegate said he had a conversation with his counterpart in Clayton, David Rowlands, and an agreement was reached.
“We will be happy to do that, and enter into this [partnership] with them,” Applegate said.
In another matter of regional inter-city cooperation, it was mentioned at the meeting by Union Mayor Patricia Goudy that the city had received a nice letter from Rowlands thanking Union for sending city workers to aid in cleaning up downed tree limbs from a thunderstorm in late May.
“We were happy to help,” Applegate said of Union aiding its neighbor.
In other business, a bid from America’s Decorative Concrete, LLC was approved for a Community Development Block Grant project that will take place in the southern portion of Union.
The bid from America’s Decorative Concrete of $83,320, was almost $17,000 less than the estimate of $100,000 to place handicap accessible ramps into sidewalks at street intersections.
Council member Michael O’Callaghan announced nominations are still being sought for the annual Spirit of Union awards, which go to homeowners for beautifying their properties.
The next scheduled meeting of Union Council, set for June 27, was cancelled due to lack of an agenda. If business does come up that needs Council attention a meeting could be called for that date, at 7:30 p.m.
The next meeting of Union City Council will be at 7:30 p.m. July 11 in at the Union Municipal Building, 118 N. Main St.
