Ruth Eubanks has never been without a job.

And at 89, it’s likely she won’t have to worry about keeping her job at the Subway, 1201 Barron St. in Eaton.

“She sets a good example for everyone,” said Jane Bryant, who owns the Subway with her husband, Chuck. “She shows up every day, and sometimes that is hard to get people to do. All of the employees at our stores can’t wait till Friday to spend time with Ruthie. It is a great pleasure and enjoyment to have Ruthie working for us.”

In January, Eubanks will have worked at the Subway for 16 years. She was one of its first employees.

“Subway is a great place to work,” said Eubanks. “It is my favorite job that I have ever had. The people I work with are in high school and college and they are just great to work with. They are all very helpful.”

Eubanks has slowed down because of arthritis, and instead of working full time, she now works from 1 to 4 p.m. Fridays.

Before working at Subway, Eubanks was a hostess at Traditions Restaurant, south of Eaton on Barron Street. When they closed, she went to Subway the next day and was hired.

“I have never been without a job,” said Eubanks. “I have worked someplace all my life. I love people. I have always had jobs around people.”

She worked at Rikes Department Store in downtown Dayton for more than 20 years selling china, dresses and shoes.

“At Christmas time, they had the most beautiful decorated window that brought people from all over. It was a most wonderful store.”

When she isn’t working at Subway, Eubanks plays Euchre each Wednesday at the Preble County Senior Center.

She volunteers each year to make candy for the Nov. 6-7 Holiday Craft Show and Luncheon for the Catholic Church of the Visitation. This year, she will dip pretzels and make other candy.

Born and raised in Dayton, Ruth came to Preble County with her husband in 1958. She has been a widow since 1985.

She has two children, a son who lives outside New Paris, and a daughter who resides in San Diego,
Calif.
