PIQUA — Starting Jan. 17 with the coming spring semester, Edison Community College will be offering one of the country’s first certificate and associate degree courses in renewable energy.
“Edison is developing full, one- and two-year programs in renewable energy,” said Thomas Looker, an associate professor of mechanical engineering technology at Edison.
He announced the new program on “College Bound,” a public access television program that returns to the air next month throughout the upper Miami Valley. Green jobs, new careers in renewable energy and the changing fields in engineering technology, will be highlighted.
Looker and Steven Sykes, both associate engineering technology professors at Edison, were in-studio guests for the previously-recorded program, and served as resources for a 20-minute segment on the one-hour show completed at Dayton Access Television (DATV).
According to Jack Kramer, director of marketing for Edison, Looker said in the next eight to 12 years positions in industrial management, first-line supervision, the electrical technologies, and sources of alternative energy will be among the top 10 growth jobs in “green” and engineering-related careers.
Edison currently offers short term, fast-track and certificate programs in industrial management, automation and robotics, electronics engineering technology, computer-aided design, mechanical engineering design, and advanced manufacturing systems, Kramer said.
Playback dates for the “College Bound” show on upper Miami Valley access television stations will be determined in several weeks, Kramer said.
