ENGLEWOOD — Business was brief at the June 15 Northmont school board meeting. Superintendent Doug Lantz commented on how smoothly everything had gone leading up to the summer break and thanked teachers, students and staff for their efforts.
He also thanked the high school ROTC for volunteering to move classroom materials from Phillipsburg Elementary to Union Elementary. Most furniture and playground equipment has been moved. Phillipsburg will not reopen in the fall.
Also at the meeting, Alicia Driver was awarded the superintendent’s Helping Hands, given monthly to a school volunteer. Driver was nominated by Stephanie Coatsworth, seventh-grade cheerleading coach.
“For two years Alicia has been helping out with the cheerleading program at the middle school,” according to Coatsworth.
“She always makes sure that the girls have healthy food to eat before the games. As a coach, it is very nice to not have to worry about these things. She has also created order forms, run errands and attended every game. In addition, she comes to school to help out and has been very involved.”
Board President Linda Blum said, “We could not accomplish what we do here at Northmont without our wonderful volunteers.”
In other action, the board approved an eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C. for May 2010 and accepted cash gifts totaling more than $2,300 to Englewood Elementary from Englewood Elementary PTO for field trip costs.
Blum also announced she met with Ohio’s Gov. Strickland and six superintendents and treasurers from around the state to share their thoughts on school funding.
“I’ve been working on school funding for 16 years and will continue to express my desire for equal, high quality education for all students no matter where they live.”
The board went into executive session to discuss compensation issues. The next regular meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, July 13, at Union Elementary School, 418 W. Martindale Road, Union.
