KETTERING — The fourth annual Ohio Veteran Barbecue Cook-off will be held Friday, July 9, and Saturday at Kettering American Legion Post 598, 5700 Kentshire Drive, just north of the Centerville border.
More than three dozen barbecue teams from several states will compete for an opportunity to represent Ohio at the Jack Daniels National Championship in October in Lynchburg, Tenn.
The event is open to the public, and proceeds will benefit the Dayton VA Hospital.
Event organizer Jim Ferguson said there will be vendors at the site, just southwest of Whipp and Bigger roads, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday selling barbecue and other foods, as well as beer, soft drinks “and just about anything barbecue-related.”
Several bands will provide live music all day Saturday, including Aerial View, The Impalas, Bluesmaster and The Country Fried Band.
The barbecue teams take the event seriously, paying a $200 entry fee and competing for $8,000 in cash and trophies. Saturday is cooking and judging day for entries in the chicken, ribs, pork and brisket categories. The event is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.
Ferguson said the judges include Kettering Mayor Don Patterson and Vice Mayor Tony Klepacz, as well as Col. Richard Hazdra, Vice Commander of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base’s 88th Air Base Wing. Ben-Gal cheerleaders also will make an appearance for the 4 p.m. Saturday awards ceremony.
