MIAMISBURG — A year-long project to rebuild Central Avenue begins in May and involves road widening; sidewalk, gutter and curb replacements; and tree lining.

The estimated $2 million project is being funded through a $1.48 million Issue 2 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission, along with $225,000 in city match funding and an estimated $270,000 from the Ohio Department of Transportation for asphalt resurfacing.

The project takes in First Street through 12th Street and affects about 110 property owners with homes or businesses along Central or that use it for primary access.

“It’s quite a day to finally see that come to fruition,” said Miamisburg councilman Darin Preston, noting how greatly improved access into the city’s historic downtown will be upon project completion.

A date has not yet been set, but Miamisburg is planning a public meeting before construction starts in May. City staff are meeting individually with property owners affected by the project.

City engineer Bob Stanley said the bulk of the work will be completed by November, with only the asphalt resurfacing left to be done in the spring.

“We’re looking at a one-way scenario starting in May until about November, then return to two-way,” he said.

Miamisburg manager Keith Johnson said the city is publicizing the project as much as possible, including on social networking websites.

“There will be significant disruption,” he said. “But the look of that road will dramatically change.”

Johnson said the city and other websites will include detour maps and list status updates.

Mayor Dick Church Jr. described the project as inconvenient, but one “we’ll all be proud of” and said “we’ll all just have to suck it up during the construction time.”
