MIAMISBURG — Miamisburg Mayor Dick Church Jr. and members of the former Miamisburg Mound Community Improvement Corp. presented the Mound Builder Award to U.S. Rep. Mike Turner at a May 15 luncheon.

The MMCIC recently was renamed the Miamisburg Development Corp.

Turner was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the success of the Mound Advanced Technology Center, a former Department of Energy defense weapons installation being redeveloped as a business and technology park.

Officials talked about Turner’s critical work in pushing for completion of environmental cleanup of the site and redevelopment of it.

When it appeared in 2007 that the DOE would leave on the site an area known as OU-1, containing various wastes dating back to the 1950s, Turner called for a congressional hearing to be held at the Mound to draw attention to the issue.

Collaborating with U.S. Rep. David Hobson and other members of the congressional delegation, Turner then led the effort in Congress to provide adequate funding — $40 million in total — to ensure that the Mound’s cleanup would be completed.

Most recently, Turner supported a request to launch the site’s redevelopment by way of $1 million in Congressionally directed funding in fiscal year 2009. The funds will be used to further develop a plan for the site to become an energy center.

Now in its fourth year, the Mound Builder award recognizes individuals who have been leaders in the effort to transform the Mound into a successful business and technology park. Award recipients are active in energizing community efforts, spreading awareness and generating interest and excitement.

The award’s name pays tribute to the Adena Indians who lived in the area and built the conical mound that neighbors the site. Past award recipients include:

2006 — John Weithofer, a retired, former city manager and former MMCIC board chairman; Dr. Larry Dosser, Mound Laser and Photonics president.

2007 — Dick Flitcraft, MMCIC board advisor.

2008 — Robert Lowden, charter member, former MMCIC board member; U.S. Rep. Dave Hobson.

2009 — Employees of PerkinElmer, a designer, manufacturer and deliverer of advanced technology solutions to critical health and safety concerns, including maternal and fetal health, clean water and air, safe food and toys.

PerkinElmer is one of 14 companies that employ a total of 350 employees at the Mound Advanced Technology Center.
