Following a successful June program for youngsters emerged in the life and times of the 1930s, the Oakwood Historical Society continues to be busy with late summer and early fall programs at its headquarters, the Long-Romspert Homestead, 1947 Far Hills Ave.
Last spring, through the efforts of a group of Oakwood High School seniors, the gardens were cleared of honeysuckle. Now the flowers are in bloom, and the vegetables ready for harvest. Curb plantings and a new sign give signature to the Homestead and the Society.
“From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 28, more than 20 British automobiles from the past will be on display on our grounds,” said Mark Risley, Society president. “We plan to feature many marques from the popular MINI Cooper to the exquisite Rolls-Royce, through a local connection to the British Transportation Museum. Guests are asked to park on adjacent streets, at the Wright Library, or enjoy a Sunday walk.”
The Society will host its third neighborhood walk in the Town of Oakwood, a triangular shaped portion of Oakwood originally developed in 1872. It is bounded by Far Hills Avenue on the east, Oakwood Avenue on the west, Park Avenue on the south and Thruston Boulevard on the north. This event is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 25.
The Wright Memorial Library in association with the Oakwood Historical Society will present “The Legend of Roswell” which explores the continuing fascination with the UFO story and its alleged connection with Wright Patterson Air Force Base.
To learn more about “The Legion of Roswell” attend the presentation at 2 p.m Oct. 16 at the Wright Library.
