OAKWOOD — Timothy Judge, 16, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor held by the Boy Scouts of America’s Troop 101 in Oakwood.
Master of ceremony was U.S. Air Force Col. Matthew Kell, former scoutmaster of the troop, who returned for the event from service at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and who was presented the Mentor Pin from Judge, a junior at Oakwood High School.
Fr. Dan Meyer of Holy Angels Church gave the invocation and the benediction at the ceremony.
For his Eagle Scout Project, Judge involved more than 65 volunteers during a three-month period as they sorted through 40,000 American flags used by the Dayton National Cemetery.
More than 1,500 of the flags were repaired, and almost 700 were retired at a special ceremony held in the early hours of Memorial Day, prior to the troop’s participation at the cemetery where flags are set on each grave to honor veterans.
Work on the project was completed in Scout Hall at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Oakwood where volunteers were set up at different stations, including ones to count and rebundle the flags.
This fall, just days following the ceremony, Judge left for the full school year on a Rotary Youth Exchange to study at the Lycée Polyvalent La Saulaie in Saint Marcellin, France.
He is currently living with the first of three different host families, attending classes taught in French, playing soccer in a community league, and participating in Rotary events with exchange students from around the world who also are living near the French Alps.
Judge is being sponsored by Rotary District 6670.
