OAKWOOD — It is a tradition that goes back 60 or 70 years, and is showing no signs of melting away.
Oakwood’s Ice Cream Social will be from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at Shafor Park at Shafor Boulevard and Patterson Road.
“It is held to celebrate the fall season and the start of the school season,” said Carol Collins, Oakwood’s director of leisure services. “It has changed a little over the years.”
New this year is that the chicken dinner will be provided by Bellyfire Catering, rather than having box dinners from Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken.
The event is not a fundraiser; it is put on by the city and paid for by tickets sold.
Tickets cost $5.50 if purchased before the event at the Oakwood Community Center and $7 the day of the event. They include dinner, a drink and ice cream.
The headlining dessert will be served up by Mayor Bill Duncan, Oakwood City Council members and school staff.
There will be carnival games for the kids, at a cost of 25 cents per ticket, and an “avenue of organizations,” which gives local nonprofit groups a chance to share information.
Also, at 4:15 p.m., the Oakwood High School band will perform.
“It’s a nice community event,” Collins said.
In case of rain, the event will be held at the OCC.
