SPRINGBORO — The local Board of Education on Tuesday, May 26, voted to lay off eight more employees to offset deficits anticipated because of the failure of levies that sought new operating money.
Nurse Bronwyn Patterson; secretaries Elizabeth Wysong and Sandy Sink; library aides Charlotte McGinley and Jodi Oakes; and clerical aides Mindy Tischler, Cassandra Roberts and Rochelle Fenlon will be laid off at the end of the school year.
“These are high-quality people,” Assistant Superintendent Larry Hook said. “I hope, pray, we can get them back expeditiously.”
The cuts come in the aftermath of four property tax levy losses at the polls — dating to March 2008.
Most recently, voters on May 5 rejected a five-year, 4.11-mill levy by 111 votes, 4,652 to 4,541.
In February, the board laid off 11 custodians as part of earlier cuts. Then the board approved two rounds of additional cuts, valued at $3 million.
One set of cuts was contingent on passage of the May levy.
Two more jobs will be cut in June, officials said.
In addition next year, there will be no busing of students living inside a two-mile radius of their school.
Jonathan Wright Elementary, the school named after Springboro’s founder, will be closed.
The hiring of new teachers will be limited to special education teachers mandated by law changes.
And families will pay up to $1,900 in pay-to-participate fees for sports and marching band.
