TROY, Miami County — The Paul G. Duke Foundation presented the Miami County Park District with a $250,000 check to fund the remaining 1.5-mile section of the Troy bike trail Wednesday, Nov. 18 at the Miami County Park District’s Central Office, 2645 E. Ohio 41, east of Troy.
The newest section of the trail is to be named the Paul G. Duke Memorial Bikeway. It will extend from Lytle Road south to Eldean Road.
“It seems fitting that the section of this bikeway be funded by The Paul G. Duke Foundation and named in his honor, after all this is where Mr. Duke’s business started,” said Robert Shook, chairman of the Miami County Trails Task Force.
The trail will be on property owned by the Miami County Commissioners, most of which runs along Route 25A.
Jerry Eldred, executive director of the park district experessed his gratitude to the foundation for the funding. “This is a vital link as we continue toward connecting Troy and Piqua,” he said.
Construction is expected to start in 2010 and be completed by the end of
the year.
Patricia Duke Robinson, president of The Paul G. Duke Foundation, established by her father in 1983, was present at the presentation. The foundation is committed to carrying on Duke’s father’s philanthropic tradition of supporting non-profit organizations primarily in Miami County where the Duke Garden Centers originated, according to Amanda Smith, Marketing Coordinator for the
Miami County Park District.
Wednesday’s participants included: Robinson; Dr. B. Mark Hess, vice president of the foundation; Ronald Scott, vice president of the foundation; Robert J. Shook, chairman of the Miami County Trails Task Force; John A. Wannemacher, president of the Miami County Park District Board of Commissioners; and J. Scott Myers, deputy director of the Miami County Park District.

People, get out and use your parks, they are wonderful and highly underused in the area. It's a great way to spend time as a family.
