TROY — The Troy Strawberry Festival’s first pickleball tournament brought fans and players to Duke Park on June 6.

The event saw 86 players gather to compete in four divisions: men younger than 40, men 50 and older, mixed 50 and older, and women 50 and older.

Tournament organizers allowed play in the winners bracket and losers bracket. Play began before 10 a.m. and finished after 7 p.m.

The tournament opening ceremonies saw Lois Wright, local senior member at 90, serve the first volley.

Winners were:

49 and younger class: Rodd Buttars and Kimberly Monte from Indiana. Lester and Adam Barker from Ludlow Falls took second-place ribbons.

Men older than 50 class: Kerry Byrd and Tom Gallagher from Cincinnati took first-place honors. Lynn Laymon from Arizona and Ken Rohrer from Troy took second place.

Women 50 and older class: Barbara Hager from Pemberville and Linda Laymon from Arizona won first-place honors. Dorothy Sargent from Tipp City and Brenda Causey from Piqua took second-place ribbons.

Mixed doubles: Al and Barbara Hager from Pemberville were first-place winners, with Chery Wyatt and Martin Mathers from Middletown receiving second-place ribbons.

In the men’s 50 and older losers bracket: Al Hager and Robert Royster earned third place.

In the women’s 50 and older losers bracket: Delores Royster from Reynoldsburg and Beth Rindler from Troy took third place.

In the men’s younger than 50 bracket: Terry Brower from Troy and Keith Klenan from Sidney earned third place.

It is great to see some of the people I have recently played and become friends with, do so well at the Troy pickleball tournament.
Congratulations, Al Hagar, Cheryl Wyatt and Rodd Buttars. Hope everyone has a summer filled with pickleball. - Rodney at AllAboutPickleball.com
