TIPP CITY — To participate in high school athletics next school year, students will be required to achieve a 1.5 grade-point average to be eligible. It’s possible they won’t be alone when it comes to having to meet eligibility requirements.
Superintendent John Kronour told the Tipp City Schools Board of Education he’s considering recommending the district require students participating in all extracurricular activities meet eligibility requirements. His recommendation should come yet this summer, Kronour said Monday, June 22.
The board engaged in a lengthy discussion on the proposal to increase the athletic eligibility GPA from a 1.3 to a 1.5. The GPA last was raised — from 1 to 1.3 — for the 2007-08 school year.
Board President Scott Dixon said the new GPA would impact “a handful” of the several hundred students who participate in high school athletics.
Kronour said coaches were concerned that raising the requirement left the “possibility of losing students who may have extenuating circumstances” and those who come to school so they can play sports.
Board member John Muldowney said some districts are requiring a 2.0 GPA and colleges also expect a better GPA. “I can’t see myself lobbying for lower standards,” he said.
Kronour said many districts have GPAs higher than 1.5, but many also have remained at 1.0, the state minimum.
In addition, the board agreed to a new weekly eligibility check, suggested by athletic director Matt Shomper, to keep a better eye on students and address problems with grades as they arise.
