WEST CARROLLTON — Voters will choose between three candidates for two at-large seats on West Carrollton City Council in the Nov. 8 election.

Challenger Patrick Merris is contesting the re-election of Angela Fryman and continued representation of Erica Shade, appointed in March.

Shade and Fryman are running on a slate with Mayor Jeff Sanner, who is urging voters to back them as a vote of confidence about the city’s direction.

“We’ve had a lot of new direction in the city in the last eight years,” Fryman said. “We have a lot of fresh thinking and fresh ideas.”

Fryman and Shade point to the opening of Interstate 75’s exit 47 and plans for Miami Bend, an entertainment district envisioned from the interchange to bends in the Great Miami River, near downtown.

Merris, a military veteran and paralegal, described different priorities.

“I am a candidate that would put present concerns of the West Carrollton residents before expansion. I’m not against expansion, but believe in taking care of the here and now, not what may only be available now and not in the next two years,” Merris said in an email.

Shade, a bank manager, was appointed to replace Jody Jones, who stepped down in March after she was named a suspect in a federal investigation of an alleged food stamp and counterfeit operation.

Jones was linked with her former husband, Edward “Ed” Claude Jones, and his Moraine-based business.

Federal authorities said Ed Jones was the primary suspect of the investigation.

Fryman, a physician-practice manager, is completing eight years on the council. She urged voters to pick her and Shade to preserve momentum in the local government.

“There’s a huge learning curve,” she said.
