Start Up

Christine Allen grew up with eight siblings in Randolph Twp. Her mother bought all antiques because “it’s the only thing that will withstand nine kids.”

Allen has several years of experience in the banking business. She’s an artist and has worked extensively for the Centerville Arts Commission. She opened Antiques & Home Boutique in West Carrollton on Oct. 15.

Her dream business

“I’ve wanted to do a consignment shop for years and years. I thought I’d practice by selling at the flea market in Springboro,” said Allen, who lives in Centerville. “I had so much fun with it, and I got to know a lot of antique dealers. I thought, ‘Well, why not combine the two?’ ”

Description

Allen has 10,000 square feet of retail space in the strip mall near the Roberds Furniture building. She has two large areas, one for consignments and one for antiques. She plans to rent an office to a consultant or interior designer.

Grand opening

A grand opening will be held with food and live music or a DJ from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 19-20. Allen has an “Oldies and Goodies” kitchen area in the back, where she will serve coffee and doughnuts, deli items, popcorn, and old-fashioned candy. She also will have vending machines and wireless internet.

Inventory sample

• A mahogany antique wardrobe with drawers inside for $200.

• Oriental style headboard component in pine, with storage space, $300.

• Consignments: electric fireplace, tile ice-cream table, Ikea table, wooden easel.

• Collectibles: Mickey Mouse watches, glasswork, vintage toys

Quote

“I don’t know of too many shops out there like this. We have exciting pieces coming, upscale furniture, sofas, overstuffed chairs, coffee tables, end tables,” said Allen, who’s hired a manager, Tony Bolling of Springboro. “I’d like to have an appraiser come in periodically.”
