Sharp Focus: 2009 Ford Focus SES

Even though the Ford Focus received a makeover for 2008, tweaks have been made for 2009. A compact car make with four sedan trims and two coupe trims, the Focus has a new front fascia and rear end. The grille is similar to that of the Fusion and Edge in the Ford family. But when it comes to the particular coupe version that we drove, the high-end SES coupe, it's clear that restyled ends are only part of the allure. The SES is a sporty version of the Focus. With 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, chromed exhaust tips and a rear spoiler, the SES oozes sport as well as spunk.

This is a snappy little front-wheel drive car with a quick-shifting 5-speed manual transmission (a 4-speed automatic is also offered) that is paired with a 140-horsepower, 4-cylinder engine. With enough pop to satisfy most needs and an EPA mileage rating of 35 mpg highway, this Focus has the goods to match the appearance. The driver-seat experience is a good one, from the enjoyment of the quick handling to the allure of the blue backlighting for the gauges. The 60/40 split/folding back seat opens up more space to the already decent-sized 13.8 cubic feet of trunk room. Among the many standard features is Ford Sync, which allows for hands-free use of a cell phone and music. New for 2009 is an optional anti-lock braking system that includes electronic stability control. Those are behind-the-scenes items, though. What's visible up front with the Ford Focus is just as sharp.
