SPRINGFIELD — Police are searching for a man who reportedly fled a stolen Buick after a two-car accident Monday that sent at least three people to the hospital.
The crash happened at the intersection of Lagonda Avenue and East Main Street shortly after 9 a.m.
Authorities and area residents unsuccessfully searched a wooded area near Sycamore Street for the man. A woman who also was in the stolen car was taken into custody and treated for minor injuries, Springfield police Sgt. Barry Eggers said.
Nearby residents said a woman riding in the second vehicle, a Jeep Wagoneer, had been ejected from the car and was found lying on the curb.
Amy Holycross, of 837 E. Main St., ran out of her house to find a second woman trying to pull an infant from the car.
"I heard it and then I instantly heard her yelling, 'My baby! My baby!' " Holycross said, adding that an adult male passenger was bleeding from his head.
David Howard, who owns the car involved in the accident, said he let an acquaintance take the car during the weekend to do some detailing work on it. Howard reported the car stolen after the man did not return it, he said.
Howard said he was driving through town Monday morning when he spotted the acquaintance driving in his car. He contacted police and tried to follow the car, but lost track of it until finding the crash site, he said.
"I know of him, but obviously I didn't know him well enough," Howard said. "He did the wrong kind of detailing."
