County offering cab rides to VA for vets amid RTA strike

The Montgomery County Veterans Service Commission is offering taxi rides to local veterans needing a ride to appointments at the Dayton VA medical center amid an ongoing Dayton Regional RTA bus driver strike.

The service is only available to Montgomery County veterans, who can call the VSC at (937) 225-4801 to arrange a ride. The VSC has contracted with Anton’s Transportation for the service.

Montgomery County VSC Executive Director Herb Davis told commissioners Wednesday they had about $4,500 set aside for the service but had no idea what the final cost would be because no one knows how long the strike will last. He said Anton’s usually costs between $35 and $50 for a ride.

They are unable, however, to help veterans who rely on the RTA for non-medical appointments, Davis said. He said the VSC distributes several dozen bus passes every month to local veterans who rely on them to get to jobs or other services.
