Additional autopsy results in for teen killed near Kettering AlterFest

Update@3 p.m. (Nov. 8):

Toxicology report for Ronnie Bowers is now complete, however, the final autopsy report has not yet been filed, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s office.

These documents will not be released at this time since they are part of an ongoing homicide investigation, the coroner’s office said.

Update@2:40 p.m.:

On Wednesday afternoon, Montgomery County Juvenile Court Judge Anthony Capizzi ordered Gregory held until his probable cause hearing on Jan. 24.

First report:

A 16-year-old Kettering defendant will face murder charges as an adult in last month's shooting death of a Fairmont High School junior , prosecutors said today.

Kylen Jamal Gregory will face two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and two other firearm charges in the Sept. 4 homicide of 16-year-old Ronnie Bowers, Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck said.

The charges against two other teens – ages 17 and 15 – in the shooting near AlterFest will remain in juvenile court, Heck said.

Heck said the case against Gregory “absolutely screams out” to be tried in adult court. He said a second murder charge against Gregory “will become clearer” as the case proceeds.”

Gregory used a stolen Smith & Wessson .357 in the shooting that occurred in the 800 block of Willowdale Avenue near Ackerman Boulevard about 9 p.m. that night after leaving AlterFest, Heck said. Bowers died two days after the shooting, and the coroner ruled it a homicide.

The two other juveniles did not know Gregory had a gun, Heck said.

Gregory also faces one count of discharging a firearm on or near prohibited premises and one count of grand theft of a firearm, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Both of the other teens face two counts of tampering with evidence, one count of assault and one count of aggravated menacing, according to the prosecutor's office. All three have remained in custody since shortly after the shooting.

A fourth suspect, 2016 Fairmont grad Miles Heizer, was jailed the morning after the shooting. The 18-year-old was released Sept. 6 pending a further investigation that is still ongoing, Heck said.

Gregory was singled out by the other two juvenile defendants as the one who "fired the gun, striking" Bowers, according to an affidavit by Kettering police for a search warrant filed in Montgomery County Juvenile Court.

Bowers, who police called an “innocent bystander,” was shot in the back of the head after leaving AlterFest in an attempt to flee an ongoing dispute that flared up between two groups at the annual Labor Day weekend event, authorities said.

He died Sept. 6 in Kettering from gun-related homicide since 2007 and the city’s first teen-on-teen homicide in decades, police have said.

Hours before his death, the three juveniles were all charged with felonious assault. At that time, the 17-year-old also was charged with tampering with evidence.

Bowers’ family members have said they wanted the case tried in adult court, and defense attorneys and court officials have said that was a distinct possibility.

They are scheduled to be in court this afternoon before Judge Anthony Capizzi.
