2 in custody after carjacking at Dayton McDonald’s

UPDATE @ 5:45 p.m.:

Dayton police will discuss potential charges with the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office from a Tuesday morning carjacking incident in which the victim falsely claimed he’d been shot and that his 2-year-old grandson was in the stolen car.

Police recovered the white 2004 Jaguar stolen from a man at the McDonald’s at 1219 N. Gettysburg Ave., but the man’s claims of being shot in the leg and that a 2-year-old boy was in the car appeared to false, police said.

Dayton police arrested a 15-year-old boy and 19-year-old Derrick Hill near Route 122 on Interstate 75 South, according to Montgomery County Jail booking data. The pair allegedly stole the man’s car and dragged him a short distance before leaving the scene.

Hill, of Dayton, has a criminal conviction after being found guilty in a minor misdemeanor marijuana possession case in Dayton Municipal Court in 2014.

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers attempted to pull over the car near Austin Landing after it was clocked going 90 mph. The driver pulled over, and as the trooper approached the vehicle, it sped off.

The vehicle then side-swiped a Chrysler Sedan on southbound I-75 near the Ohio 122 exit and pulled over. A BB gun was located in the car, troopers said. Law enforcement officials said the two suspects in the vehicle told them there never was a little boy in the car.

A search for a child was called off shortly after police started investigating the case that started with a 911 call. No Amber Alert was issued.

“I just got shot,” the man told a dispatcher in a 911 call. “I’m down here on Gettysburg and they took my car. They took my car at McDonald’s.”

The man didn’t mention a missing child until about halfway through the call.

“There’s a child in the car,” the man told the dispatcher. “Can you please have them look for my car?”

The caller said the boy was “about 2. Maybe 1 or 2.”

Asked why the man said a child was in the car, Dayton police Lt. Eric Henderson said: “I cannot answer that. All I know is the information we were provided was that there was a child in the car. But we were unable to confirm that at this point in time.”

Henderson said that in follow-up interviews with the man, officers learned that there was not a child in the back of the Jaguar.

Near the end of the 911 call, the man told the dispatcher that his leg “ain’t that bad” and added, “I just want to get my car back.”

UPDATE @ 12:33 p.m.

One adult and one juvenile are in custody after the alleged carjacking, according to Dayton police. Earlier reports mentioned two juvenile males were responsible for taking a man’s white Jaguar from a McDonald’s parking lot in Dayton.

Police also said they will review potential charges with the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

UPDATE @ 10:57 a.m.

The active search for a child supposedly in the car that was taken at McDonald’s was called off after an apparent false report by the carjacking victim, according to Dayton police and the 9-1-1 record.

The 9-1-1 call from the alleged carjacking at McDonald’s didn’t mention a missing child until about halfway through the call.

“I just got shot,” the man told a dispatcher in a 911 call obtained by the Dayton Daily News and News Center 7. ” I’m down here on Gettysburg and they took my car. They took my car at McDonald’s.”

The man also said he was shot in the leg. Police said Tuesday morning that they don’t believe any child was in the 2004 Jaguar when it was taken and that the 911 caller didn’t suffer a gunshot wound.

“There’s a child in the car,” the man told a dispatcher. “Can you please have them look for my car?”

The caller said the child was his grandson and that the boy was “about 2. Maybe 1 or 2.”

Near the end of the call, the man said his leg “ain’t that bad” and added, “I just want to get my car back.”

UPDATE @ 9:27 a.m.

Dayton Lt. Eric Henderson said the victim was not shot during the carjacking, and investigators cannot confirm there was a child in the car when it was taken.

The victim was dragged briefly as the suspects pulled away in his car, Henderson said.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Montgomery County deputies assisted after being notified of the possible missing child.

Henderson said police were initially working on information provided by the victim, who said initially that his grandchild was in the car when it was taken.

Henderson said after further interviews with the victim, it is now unclear whether there was child in the car.

The vehicle has been recovered and the two juvenile suspects are in the custody of Dayton police.
