Dayton father charged with intoxication, firing shots

DAYTON  —  A city man is facing handgun-related criminal charges after his teenage daughter reported he was intoxicated and firing a handgun, according to a Dayton police incident report.

Edward L. Callihan Jr., 35, has been charged with using weapons while intoxicated and unlawful discharge of a firearms, according to police.

Around 9:43 p.m. on Sunday, city officers were dispatched to the first block of Vincent Street for a report of a man shooting a gun out the back door of his home.

According to the report, Callihan’s 14-year-old daughter told a 911 dispatcher her father was intoxicated and shooting a gun.

“…. She was afraid someone was going to get hurt,” Dayton Police Officer Stephen Hargraves wrote.

After officers arrived, Callihan’s  daughter who called police walked outside with her mother and four sisters, according to the Dayton police incident report.

“Once out of the house, (the teen’s mother) and her daughters were escorted to a place of safety away from the house – the children were crying and frantically upset,” Hargraves wrote. “(The woman) said her husband was inside the house drunk with a hand gun…”

Officers spoke with Callihan and got him to walk outside the home.

“Edward Callihan was extremely intoxicated – his speech was slurred, his eyes were red and watery, and he smelled of alcohol,” Hargraves wrote. “… Edward told us he hid the gun in the kitchen oven, which could have resulted in an unknowingly explosive/hazardous situation for others had the gun not been located.”

Officers located the gun.

Callihan was released to a family friend.
