Prison sentence in ’15 double-shooting that left 1 dead

Sentencing occurred today, Feb. 1 for George Dewberry Sr. who was convicted last month of aggravated murder with gun specifications in the Aug. 20, 2015 killing a 27-year-old West Carrollton man and the wounding of a woman.

UPDATE @ 12:09 p.m. (Feb. 1):

Dewberry was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Judge Barbara Gorman called Dewberry a "stone-cold killer" after Dewberry tried to tell Jesse Pierce's mother that he didn't do it and that the trial should have been stopped.

UPDATE @ 5:39 p.m. (Jan. 17): A jury convicted George Dewberry Sr. of aggravated murder with gun specifications in the death of a 27-year-old West Carrollton man and the wounding of a woman.

The Montgomery County Common Pleas jury deliberated for about four hours Tuesday afternoon before returning guilty verdicts on all counts.

Dewberry — who testified that he was close with Jesse Rae Pierce of West Carrollton — stared at the jury as a bailiff read the verdicts, sitting back and smiling as the members were polled by his attorney.

Dewberry, 48, also was found guilty of attempted murder for shooting 28-year-old Laura Castro in the face during the confrontation in a vehicle on Vina Villa Avenue in Dayton.

“We’re very pleased with the verdict in this case,” county assistant prosecutor Lynda Dodd said. “We’re very grateful for the victim following through.”

UPDATE @ 9:47 a.m. (Jan. 17)

During closing arguments in a Montgomery County Common Pleas Court murder trial for George Dewberry Sr. today, prosecutors said he had set up a meeting with Jesse Pierce under the guise of a meeting in which Dewberry was going to give Pierce money and a gun.

Instead, “He got into that car with a plan,” assistant prosecutor Jennifer Weber told the jury. “This defendant got into the vehicle with the purpose to execute Jesse Pierce.”

Weber said Laura Castro was shot at twice, and needed eight surgeries. The prosecutor said Castro’s jaws had plates and pins put in them, her mouth was wired shut, she lost teeth and that she still has scars that were visible to the jury when Castro testified.

Weber said Dewberry wanted Castro dead because she was the “only witness” and that Castro only survived because she “played dead.” Weber said Castro was “still shaking” in court and that she was scared of Dewberry.

Weber asked the jury to find Dewberry guilty of both the murder of Pierce and the attempted murder of Castro.
