Death in Butler County Jail ruled suicide

A Cincinnati woman’s death in the county jail has been ruled a suicide by the Butler County Coroner’s Office.

Samantha Young, 21, died from hanging on Tuesday in the Hanover Street facility, according to coroner’s office release.

The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.

“This is a tragedy. Our condolences go out to the family,” said Lt. Rick Bucheit.

INITIAL REPORT

A woman was found dead Tuesday in Butler County Jail, the sheriff’s office said in a release.

Sheriff’s Office Major Mike Craft said the death is under investigation as a suicide.

The 21-year-old female inmate, Samantha Young of Cincinnati, was found dead in her cell, according to the sheriff’s office.

At approximately 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, a corrections officer discovered Young unresponsive with a bed sheet tied around her neck and her knees bent. Corrections officers got Young down and started CPR until medical staff arrived.

Despite efforts, Young was pronounced dead at the jail by coroner’s office staff.

The sheriff’s and coroner’s offices continue to investigate the incident. Officials say there is no indication of foul play.

Young was booked into jail Jan. 14 for a probation violation.
