“The deputy locked up his breaks to try to avoid him, but unfortunately hit the man,” Day said.
The pedestrian, Guillermo Hernandez, 64, received non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Essell was not injured.

Day said Hernandez was in possession of alcohol at the time of the crash. He was cited for not crossing in a crosswalk.
The crash remains under investigation by Fairfield police.
