Father of Dayton child shot, killed said he had been looking for his son

The children’s mother Claudena Helton is being held at the Montgomery County Jail on charges related to the children’s deaths.

In a News Center 7 interview, Kaiden’s father Stephen Fletcher said he tried to find his son and get in touch the child’s mother for the last three years.  He said Helton’s family told him she moved out of town, they hadn’t heard from her and they didn’t know where she was located.

"I'm very devastated right now,” Fletcher said. “I can't sleep. I can't eat. I don't even know what to do with myself now. It's crazy ... he didn't deserve this. I don't even know why she would do this. I don't have any answers for anything.”

Fletcher said he learned his son had been shot when he saw it on the news.

“I just heard my baby momma's name and I heard my son's name,” Fletcher said. “And I heard what happened, so right then and there I literally fainted like passed out because I  was so worried. I couldn't' believe that it had happened.”

Helton faced previous allegations involving children before the shootings. In March 2014, she was convicted of disorderly conduct in Montgomery County Juvenile Court, according to the county prosecutor's office.

At the time of the shootings, Montgomery County Children Services initiated an investigation focused on Helton.

“I'm not going to say anything evil or rude,” Fletcher said. “I mean, even as much as I'm hurt. Because I’m not that type of person. But she's in jail. She deserves to be in jail.”

On May 23, 2010, Trotwood police arrested Fletcher for allegedly threatening Helton’s life, punching her in the face and choking her until she nearly fainted, according to a police report. Fletcher was charged with misdemeanor counts of aggravated menacing and domestic violence. He was found guilty of one of the counts and sentenced to 123 days in jail.

“I love my son,” Fletcher said. “I'd do anything to have him back now, man. I'm going through a lot right now. I'm hurting real bad.”
