Jail inmate escapes program in stolen van

A Montgomery County jail inmate added additional charges after reportedly stealing a van operated by the county’s Secure Transitional Offender Program (STOP).

Dayton police were called to the 1900 block of South Gettysburg Avenue just before 7 a.m. Dec. 2 on the report of an escaped prisoner and grand theft auto.

The STOP guard told police he was assisting with the morning trays for breakfast and that he has inmates help him with this.

The suspect later arrested, Matthew Longstreath, 32, allegedly told the guard that the back door of the van was jammed and wouldn’t shut. When the guard walked to back of van, Longstreath went to the front and got in and fled, according to the police report.

Longstreath claimed his daughter is ill in the hospital, according to the police report. He was later nabbed by Fairborn police.

Longstreath faces charges of theft and escape.
