Man in jail after scuffle with police officer at West Chester bank

A West Chester police officer is recovering from minor injuries and a suspect is behind bars after a scuffle Sunday afternoon at the Fifth Third Bank branch inside the Tylersville Road Kroger.

Officer Matthew Young has been released from the hospital, according to Barb Wilson, township spokeswoman. Damian Anderson, 21, of Cincinnati, is charged with assault, resisting arrest and forgery for allegedly attempting to pass a fraudulent check at about 2:15 p.m. at the bank.

“The suspect was still there; there was a bit of a scuffle with the officer and the suspect,” Wilson told this news outlet. “The suspect was taken into custody. Somebody there at the store, a civilian, stepped in to help. No weapons were used.”

Anderson was arraigned Monday in Butler County Area III Court where bond was set at $52,100. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday.

The same bank branch was robbed Nov. 3 by a man dressed in black wearing gloves, a mask and a black hat with colorful puzzle pieces that is believed to be a Cincinnati Reds Autism Awareness hat.

West Chester Twp. officials are still looking for the suspect in that robbery. Surveillance images show few clues, but police believe shoppers in the store or parking lot at the time of the robbery may remember seeing the man.

A black SUV may have been involved in the offense, police previously told this news outlet.

Anyone with information regarding the Nov. 3 robbery should call West Chester police at 513-759-7272.
