Trooper in cruiser at OVI checkpoint in Dayton hit

An Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser that was part of an OVI checkpoint Friday night in Dayton was struck by a suspected drunk driver.

The cruiser was hit on the driver’s side door by a white minivan as the trooper was turning left onto High Street from East Fifth Street, according to the patrol. The collision was reported at approximately 10 p.m.

Both drivers were transported to Miami Valley Hospital for minor injuries and have been released.

The driver of the minivan was arrested for OVI.

A total of 141 vehicles passed through the checkpoint at South Keowee Street and East Fifth Street, with the minivan driver as the only arrest.

At East Third and Terry Street, 143 vehicles passed through the checkpoint with two OVI arrests and one drug arrest made.
