2 OVI checkpoints in Dayton tonight

The Dayton Police Department, along with members of the Combined Agency OVI Task Force of Montgomery County, will operate two sobriety checkpoints at 9 p.m. tonight, March 24.

The checkpoints will be in the areas of East Third and Terry streets and North Keowee at East Fifth streets in Dayton.

Police agencies must give notice of the checkpoints in accordance with state law.

The goal of the OVI task force is to reduce the number of alcohol and drug related traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities in Dayton and Montgomery County.

The majority of the deadliest crashes occur on weekends. In 2016, there were 596 alcohol-related crashes in Montgomery County alone, according to a release from the task force. Those crashes took the lives of 21 people and injured 273.
