DAYTON — Three men were arrested while police were securing the 500 block of North Broadway Street so fire crews could battle a blaze at a duplex Tuesday night, Sept. 29.

One of the men had to be Tased.

Dayton police and fire dispatch received the call about a structure fire at 7:18 p.m.

Police Sgt. Wendy Stiver said officers were blocking the roads when intoxicated males began interrupting the officers, walking into the street and acting disorderly.

“In this case, this is an extremely dangerous situation,” Stiver said. “Our job is to keep anybody who’s not wearing protective gear as far away from the scene as possible.”

The three men were arrested on charges of misconduct during an emergency. The male who was Tased was also arrested on a charges of obstructing official business and resisting arrest.

Fire Capt. Mike Kenney said fire was showing and there was heavy smoke to the two-story duplex at 515 N. Broadway when crews arrived.

There was heavy fire on the first floor, he said, and when crews pulled their lines to the front door “the whole first floor lit up with fire.”

Firefighters made their way inside and knocked down the fire on the first floor. Secondary crews handled the blaze that made its way upstairs.

The preliminary investigation is that the fire started on the first floor of the building, which although unoccupied, contained some furniture. There was no electric service to the building, Kenney said.

It took crews 15 to 20 minutes to put out the fire. There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Kenney said.
