DAYTON — Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies are looking for 18-year-old Levi Slaughter for the Harrison Twp. daylight shooting of a 30-year-old man Jan. 17 on Pittsburg Avenue.
Deputies discovered the body of Douglas E. Byrd Jr. around 3 p.m. His assailant shot Byrd twice in the back of the head with a large-caliber semiautomatic pistol.
Sheriff’s Maj. Dave Hale said Tuesday prosecutors have charged Slaughter with murder, felonious assault and weapons violations based on deputies’ investigation.
At the time of the slaying, Sheriff Phil Plummer said Byrd was in a vehicle with others when an argument apparently broke out. Witnesses told deputies Byrd got out of the vehicle and started walking away. Another occupant also got out, walked up behind Byrd and fired several shots, according to the witnesses.
Hale said deputies got a description of the vehicle from witnesses and located it several hours after the slaying. Other interviews led the deputies to Slaughter as a suspect. Initially, authorities theorized the slaying might have been gang-related, given witness statements. Hale said the investigation uncovered no gang connections.
Hale said anyone with information on Slaughter’s whereabouts should call (937) 225-HELP. The major said Slaughter should be considered armed and dangerous, and should not be approached.
