DAYTON — Dayton Police arrested four Dayton men in two separate incidents involving the theft of housing construction metal early this morning, Wednesday, Oct. 21.
Dayton Police Sgt. Clarence West said the men were taken to Montgomery County Jail, arrested on one count each of breaking and entering and the possession of criminal tools.
The men caught in the first incident were identified as Charles J. Pyles, 31, of 1844 Vull Ave., Dayton, and Joshua S. Werner, 19, both of 1844 Vull Ave., next door to the vacant house at 1845 Vull Ave., where the first incident occurred, West said.
West said shortly after midnight, crews were dispatched on the report of two suspicious males seen carrying metal in the area of the old EPA landfill site on Valleycrest Drive. The officers got out of their patrol cars and as they walked into the area they spotted two men stripping aluminum from a vacant house at 1845 Vull Ave., West said.
Other crews were called in and an officer on foot heard noise behind him and went to investigate the Valleycrest landfill site. Officers apprehended two more men found to have electrical wire and a stolen air compressor and bolt cutters, he said. They took the electrical wire from where they used to have trailers, so it was not scrap metal but metal actually being used, West said.
The crews apprehended and arrested in that incident, Charles E. Lorimer, 23, of 301 N. Garland Ave., and Gerald K. Ford, 34, of 118 Valleycrest, which is right across from the landfill, West said.
The two groups were not working together, West said, and the police stumbled onto one while looking for the other, he said.
West said the police had been having reports of thefts in the area in recent months.
