DAYTON — A suspect in an armed robbery was arrested without incident on Drummer Street this evening. The arrest followed a masked gunman robbing the Kwik ‘n Kold at 1316 Wyoming Street about 3:45 p.m. Saturday shooting one employee in the back.
The Drummer Street arrest came at the same time police surrounded a nearby house on Samuel Avenue, suspecting that a suspect or suspects in the Kwik ‘n Kold robbery might have been in the house. After blocking off two blocks of Samuel and evacuating surrounding residents, police concluded that they had the lone suspect in the afternoon’s robbery and shooting.
After being shot during the afternoon hold up, the employee fled to get away from the shooter who also fled the scene, said Sgt. Donald Burden, Dayton police. The shooter escaped with an unknown amount of cash.
“We are not sure if anyone else was involved,” Burden said.
A citizen reportedly followed the shooter, Burden said, and police surrounded a home at 141 Samuel where they believe the suspect was holed up inside.
During the standoff, Dayton Police called to people on a loud hailer inside the Samuel Avenue home to come out with their hands up. Earlier radio traffic indicated that a dog had been shot, apparently by police at that address.
The area has been cordoned off and a crowd was gathered about two blocks away from a single story residence. Numerous police officers, some with bullet-resistant vests lined the street. More than a dozen police cars including a K-9 unit also lined the street. The SWAT team also was called.
John Williams, who lives one street over on Drummer from the standoff was in his backyard when he heard noises.
“I heard what sounded like gunshots and I came out and there were police everywhere,” Williams said. “This is crazy. I’ve lived on Drummer for 53 years. This neighborhood, it’s just gotten crazy.”
John Wiles, a neighbor, who lives nearby said he heard three shots and then police on the loud hailer. His wife, Debra, said, “I stuck my head out the door and the police said we had to leave.”
John Wiles rushed out with only a fleece jacket and no shirt. The Wiles had hoped to attend a surprise birthday party at 6 p.m. but ended up standing on the corner of Samuel and McLain chatting with their neighbors, unable to return to their house.
Moments after the clerk was shot on Wyoming, police radio traffic reported officers were chasing a black Cadillac and shots may have been fired from the car. Burden could not confirm whether or not the car was involved in the Kwik’n Kold robbery.
Dakota Bradstreet, a clerk at the Kwik’n Kold on Linden Avenue, said he believes his friend Wayne Sparrow, who works at the Wyoming Street store, was the clerk who was shot.
Miami Valley Hospital officials confirmed Sparrow was hospitalized, but did not have a condition. Police characterized the victim’s injuries as non-life threatening.
Amanda Phelps, who lives across Wyoming Street from the robbery, said she took her bulldog Batista to visit Sparrow at work earlier in the day. “He’s a real nice sociable guy,” Phelps said.
