DAYTON — A man getting into his car to go to work was shot multiple times and killed Monday morning, Nov. 9, in the 4700 block of Blueberry Ave.

Dead is Cornelius Maxwell Jr., 40, according to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office.

A call came in at 6:05 a.m. from a someone who said a man was shot as he was getting into his vehicle at Blueberry Avenue and Arlene Avenue, said Dayton Police Sgt. Wayne Scott.

Maxwell was on his way to work, according to Dayton Police Sgt. James Mullins. His car was parked in front of a house in the 4700 block of Blueberry Ave.

Mullins said a witness to the shooting said an unknown assailant approached the man’s car and shot through the window. Investigators found 14 shell casings. The shots were fired at close range, Mullins said.

Mullins said the assailant fled the scene. Homicide investigators were looking into why Maxwell was shot. Maxwell was living with his parents, but neither of them witnessed the shooting, Mullins said.

Cassandra O’Neal, who lives down the street from Maxwell, said she knew him as a nice person and friendly neighbor.

“It’s been a very quiet neighborhood,” she said.

Minnie Wilson, another neighbor up the street, held her young grandson in her arms and said, “This is the first thing that’s happened since we’ve been here (about three years). I really don’t like it.” She said Maxwell “always speaks” when she walks down the street. “He’s very courteous,” she said.

“He never bothered nobody,” said Bessie Vaughn, who lives across the street from the victim’s home. “I don’t know why somebody come up and shoot him like that.”
