MOOREFIELD TWP., Clark County — Burglars used their sport utility vehicle to break through the doors of a lawn equipment retailer early Monday, but they abandoned the loot they stole and the SUV when they were confronted by police, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s office and Springfield police.

According to a news release, the sheriff’s department received a call at 1:48 a.m. Monday, June 29, that a break-in was in progress at Patton’s Power Equipment, 2400 Mechanicsburg Road just outside Springfield in Moorefield Twp.

The witness who called in reported that two men drove their SUV through the front door of the business and grabbed some items and threw them into the vehicle. The men then drove south across the Springfield line.

Sgt. Dan Harris of the Springfield police said Springfield officers spotted the suspect SUV at 1:59 a.m. He said the SUV became mechanically disabled after a short pursuit, and two men were seen bailing out of the vehicle and running away.

Springfield officers gave chase but weren’t able to catch the men, Harris said.

According to the news release from the sheriff’s office, Springfield police and Clark County deputies set up a containment perimeter and brought in a search dog but did not find the suspects.

Several thousand dollars in merchandise was recovered in the SUV and returned to the business.

Anyone with information on the robbery is encouraged to call the sheriff’s office at 937-328-2560.
