CLAYTON — A 17-year-old youth continues to be listed in serious condition at Miami Valley Hospital after crashing his car down an embankment off Main Street near Taywood Road in Englewood about 9:30 a.m. on Christmas Day.
Kieran Popp of Clayton, who works at the Englewood Waffle House, was driving southbound on Main Street when his Chevrolet Equinox left the road, hit a tree and ended up in the brush, according to Englewood police. Englewood Police Sgt. Mike Lang said Popp’s seat belt and air bag probably saved the young man’s life.
A cousin, Philomena Popp, said four members of the family had worked at Waffle Houses on Christmas Day.
“They were looking for Kieran for two to three hours. He had gone to my Aunt Christy’s to get an ice cooler and was on his way back to Waffle House in Englewood when it happened,” she said. “Me and my Aunt got a call here (at the Waffle House on National Rd.) and they said he had been Careflighted to the hospital. We were hysterical because we weren’t sure how bad off he was then.”
She said her cousin is “a very good boy,” who wrestles for Northmont, is “very outgoing and very smart.”
According to his grandfather, Lawrence Popp of Englewood who visited his grandson at the hospital after the accident, his grandson broke both an arm and a leg in the accident. He said leg surgery is scheduled later today if his grandson’s fever subsides.
Lawrence Popp said he spoke to the investigating officer this morning and that “they still don’t know what happened.”
