DAYTON — The three men shot Wednesday night, in what police said was a marijuana drug deal that went bad, all had run-ins with the law involving guns or drugs.
Ryan Daniel, 21, and Thomas Casey, 29, were identified Thursday, July 9, by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office as the two men found shot to death inside 857 S. Euclid Ave.
The third man shot, identified in a Dayton police report as Edward L. Heflin, 25, remained in a hospital. He drove there Wednesday night after having been shot in the neck and chest, police said.
Thursday afternoon, a woman identifying herself as Heflin’s mother, said, “His life is in danger, there are tubes everywhere.”
Lt. Patrick Welsh said police had not been able to interview Heflin and could not discuss more particulars of the incident until that interview was complete.
According to the coroner’s office, Casey and Daniel were Dayton residents.
However, Ronald Daniel, who identified himself at the scene as Ryan Daniel’s father, said his son had been living in the Bronx, N.Y., and was in Dayton to visit his 4-year-old daughter.
“Information I got led me to here,” Daniel said Wednesday night just outside the one-story house that police and people in the neighborhood said is well known as a place to get marijuana.
He said people saw his son walk into the house and he was the one who found his son and Casey. Daniel, who described his son as someone “who knows everybody,” said he doesn’t know why Ryan was at the house.
A neighbor said she heard at least 10 shots and then a car start.
Lt. John Bardun said investigators are not looking for any suspects because they have concluded the homicides stemmed from the drug deal. According to an initial investigation, police received a call about 7:15 p.m. regarding a gunshot victim who apparently drove himself to a hospital and collapsed.
A police report listed the shooting at about 6 p.m.
Police also found two guns in the car Heflin drove to the hospital, but police have not said what kind or caliber of gun.
About 7:45 p.m., police received the call about two bodies found in the house on Euclid Avenue, Bardun said. Investigators towed away a Chevy Suburban believed to be connected to the shooting.
Criminal histories
Casey was released from the Madison Correctional Institution in January after spending about 9 1/2 years incarcerated for an aggravated assault conviction in 1999, according to state prison records.
Heflin had been sentenced to a combined four years and eight months of confinement for convictions on aggravated robbery, receiving stolen property and drug possession (cocaine) in 2003 and trafficking (marijuana) in 2008.
Daniel had a drug abuse charge pending in Dayton Municipal Court, according to court records.
