DAYTON — The former Sugarcreek Twp. fire captain accused this summer of falsifying time sheets has been indicted by a grand jury on felony charges of theft in office and tampering with records.
Jeff Melton, who resigned July 2, is to be arraigned Nov. 20 in Greene County Common Pleas Court.
Melton, 38, is accused of falsely claiming overtime for shifts worked by others 23 times in 2008 and 2009, and twice altering the time sheets of others.
Sugarcreek Twp. officials also said Melton represented himself as a Level 2 firefighter/paramedic, when Ohio Department of Public Safety records show he only obtained Level 1 certification. He was ineligible to be hired as a full-time township firefighter without a Level 2 certification.
The township is seeking restitution for $12,000 officials said Melton stole, plus nearly $300,000 in compensation they said he received because he was improperly certified.
