FAIRBORN — A standoff between police and a resident on Marchmont Drive stretched four and one-half hours but ended without injury Saturday evening.

Police first responded to a call for a peace officer at about 2:30 p.m. Claude J. Greer, a resident at 267 Marchmont, would not allow his wife into the house, said Fairborn police Sgt. Mark Stannard.

That became a standoff that brought officers and equipment from Fairborn, Beavercreek and Huber Heights police departments, crowding the nearby intersection of Marchmont and Ramona Drive and bringing neighbors outdoors to watch.

Negotiators communicated with Greer — whom Stannard said was intoxicated — via bullhorn and public address system. As the afternoon wore on, police officers deployed tear gas. Shortly before 7 p.m., officers traded shouts of “We got him,” as Greer was removed from the residence.”

“I believe he walked out,” Stannard said.

He was transported to Miami Valley Hospital after being struck by a bean-bag bullet, he said. At 8:30, Greer was in the Miami Valley emergency room for evaluation, a hospital spokeswoman said. She said she could not give a condition for him.

Natural gas provider Vectren was called to cut off gas service to the home at one point. Stannard would not comment on whether concerns were heightened after the explosion of a house, also in Fairborn, due to outdoor excavation work last Saturday. In that incident, one person was killed and eight injured.

Stannard said shutting off the gas Saturday was “for the safety of the persons inside the residence.”

Bonnie Serow said she and her family have lived next door to the Greer residence since September 2010.

“He’s always quiet,” Serow said. “He kept to himself, a good neighbor. Never had any problems.”
