DAYTON — Arson investigators have been called to investigate a fire that gutted a first-floor apartment at 12 S. Westview Ave. Wednesday morning, Oct. 28.
Dayton fire crews responded to the scene about 10 a.m. and the fire was under control in the less than 20 minutes, fire officials said.
Police were called to the scene first on the report of burglary and saw smoke coming from the apartment, Capt. Mike Stewart said. Two engines and a ladder truck responded to the scene and got the fire under control.
A woman evacuated from the complex said she heard some noise coming from the apartment before fire crews arrived, but didn’t realize there was a fire until she opened her door.
She said smoke poured in and she ran downstairs, leaving her 7-month-old kittens behind. The kittens were OK and were sitting in a second-floor window, getting plenty of fresh air.
No one was hurt in the fire and fire crews were carrying out charred furniture as of 10:30 a.m.
If the fire is ruled an arson it would be the fourth the DFD has investigated in three days. There were three arsons in a 24-hour period to start the week.
