DAYTON — Two men shot to death in unrelated weekend incidents lived high-risk lifestyles that involved drugs, police said Monday, Aug. 17.
David Green, 52, of Dayton, and Bryan Gillum, 33, of Xenia, were victims of drug-related robberies and had histories with police.
Gillum was killed Saturday about 5:30 p.m. after he and two friends drove from Xenia to buy drugs, Dayton homicide detective Sgt. Gary White said.
Witnesses said a gunman in a 1998 or 1999 brown Pontiac Grand Prix robbed Gillum, shot him in the leg and drove off.
Gillum ran two blocks and collapsed in a driveway at 2827 McCall Ave. The bullet had severed the major artery in his leg, said Ken Betz, director of the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.
“People coming to Dayton to buy drugs have a high probability of being robbed,” White said. “Dayton dope dealers routinely rob their customers because those customers normally don’t report the robbery.
“Those who get robbed have about a 50/50 chance of getting shot.”
Police said they’ve made no arrests in Gillum’s death.
There have also been no arrests in Green’s death at 1529 Weaver St. Officers responded to Green’s residence about 6:15 p.m. Sunday to find him shot in the head.
Witnesses said two men got out of a “large white vehicle,” entered Green’s home and asked about a safe. Police said it appears the incident involved drugs and the suspects knew Green. A female witness was in the house at the time of the shooting.
The two men match the description of two suspects involved in as many as three robberies during the weekend, White said.
In one of those incidents, a man in northeast Dayton was hit in the face with a gun.
Green was convicted in 2000 of carrying a concealed weapon and having weapons while under disability, court records show.
Gillum was convicted in 2008 of drug possession, according to court records.
Gillum is the city’s 27th homicide victim this year and Green the 28th.
