HARRISON TWP., Montgomery County — A man suspected in a robbery of the Rally’s Hamburgers restaurant, 3955 Salem Ave., at 12:22 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, crashed his vehicle on I-75 at Ohio 47 in Sidney at 1:37 a.m. after being chased by area police and Ohio State Patrol troopers.

A Dayton police officer, trying to stop the vehicle when it went through Dayton, threw out stop sticks that blew out a tire, according to a Dayton Police dispatcher.

The stop sticks may have helped contribute to the crash in Sidney as the vehicle was missing a tire at that time, according to a WHIO-TV report.

Ohio State Patrol Sgt. D. Reed of the Piqua Post said the driver went off the right side of the road and struck a guard rail and lost control. He said the driver was transported to Wilson Hospital in Sidney. He did not know the extent of the man’s injuries.

Lt. Brian Johns of the Dayton police department told WHIO-TV that the man driving the black SUV that crashed in Sidney is from Mason and was driving a vehicle borrowed from another Mason resident. He said the man is wanted on felony theft charges in Mason and has a history of drug abuse and drug usage. A police dog led them to the man’s car behind the Rally’s restaurant as Dayton and Trotwood police and Montgomery County Sheriff’s troopers looked for the two masked men who robbed the Rally’s at gunpoint and escaped out the back of the restaurant into the nearby area, Johns said.

Johns said the man in the SUV did not fit the description of the men who robbed the restaurant but may have been driving the getaway car, as the police dog went directly to his car. The man sped off as the officers approached the car, Johns said.

The Mason man is facing charges of failure to control his vehicle and failure to comply with Dayton police, along with the other charges in Mason, according to the TV report.
