DAYTON — A man who died today, Aug. 17, after he was hit by a train late Sunday while trying to run across a railroad track was a Dayton man, the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office said.
Jeffrey Wolford, 46, was the victim, according to a coroner’s office spokeswoman, who said Wolford was pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital.
This afternoon, the coroner’s office ruled the death an accident caused by multiple blunt-force trauma.
According to Dayton police Lt. Brian Johns, the accident happened at the CSX railroad crossing in the 1100 block of Chapel Street just before midnight Sunday.
Conductors on the train and witnesses said they saw Wolford near the tracks as the train approached the crossing. He appeared to be intoxicated and holding what appeared to be a 40-ounce bottle of beer, Johns said.
Wolford ran along the right side of the southbound train and attempted to cut across the tracks the front of it, Johns said.
The train hit and dragged Wolford before coming to a stop, Johns said.
