DAYTON — The man convicted of killing social worker Stephen Branham during a robbery try in September was sentenced Monday, March 8, to 32 years to life in prison.
“The Bible teaches us to love our enemy,” the Rev. Herman Branham, the victim’s uncle, told Cordell Mitchell Jr.
Mitchell, 22, pleaded guilty Feb. 3 to aggravated murder, aggravated robbery and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He also pleaded guilty to a concealed weapon charge and possessing a firearm stemming from his arrest.
Branham, a well-regarded social worker who facilitated classes on anger management for violent offenders, was returning from a club when Mitchell confronted him, Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer said.
