ENGLEWOOD — A 29-year-old man was taken to Miami Valley Hospital today, Feb. 2, after he was knocked at least 10 feet into the air by a van making a left turn onto Wenger Road, police said.
The man, an out-of-state resident, was not identified by name, but did complain of extreme pain to his legs and shoulder, Englewood Sgt. Mike Lang said.
His condition was not immediately known.
The driver of the van, 71-year-old David Stoner of Dayton, was cited for failing to maintain attention, Lang said.
According to police, the victim was in the crosswalk making his way across Wenger at the intersection of Main Street when he was struck.
Lang said the driver, who was headed northbound, apparently was concentrating on the oncoming traffic on Main when he turned left onto Wenger at a break in the traffic.
“He never saw the pedestrian,” Lang said. “The victim was where he was supposed to be, and the van drilled him.”
The intersection is one of the city’s busiest, Lang said.
Witnesses said the force of the 11 a.m. collision sent the victim flying 10 feet in the air, Lang said.
At the time of the accident, the victim was returning to his hotel from a nearby coffee shop. “We found the lid to his coffee on top of the van,” Lang said.
