TROTWOOD — A 3-year-old boy allegedly abducted from a Trotwood foster home by his mother and grandmother has been found unharmed in Tempe, Ariz., around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 16.

Capt. John Porter said authorities located the child at a Studio 6 Extended Stay motel after a national Amber Alert was issued around midnight. The child is being cared for by Tempe Children’s Services; the mother and grandmother are in police custody.

“They heard we were looking for them, so they hid out in the motel,” Porter said.

Greene County Children’s Service removed three children from the custody of Ashley Hill, 27, last year after she was charged with child endangering. The three were placed in foster care with their great-grandparents.

Hill was granted a weekend visit. Saturday afternoon, she returned two of the children — an 8-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy — to the great-grandparents, telling them she was going to Arizona with the 3-year-old accompanied by the child’s grandmother, Delona Gray, 48, who lives in Arizona.

The great-grandparents attempted to contact Children’s Services, but the office was closed. The great-grandparents did not try the after-hours number, deciding to wait for a scheduled home visit by Children’s Service on Monday.

Once Children’s Service discovered the child was gone, they notified Trotwood police around 10:30 p.m. Monday. Within 90 minutes, the Amber Alert was issued, Porter said.

“We got assistance from the FBI to check the airline passenger manifests,” Porter said. A records check found the three had flown from Dayton to Atlanta and from there to Phoenix. Police there first checked the grandmother’s resident, then began searching area motels.

Porter said local authorities were working with the Montgomery County Prosecutors Office on filing charges and extraditing Hill and Gray from Arizona. Those charges could include interference with custody and kidnapping.

He said the three children would likely be placed in another foster home.

Hill, of 5507 Neville St., pleaded guilty to the first-degree misdemeanor on Nov. 2 and was placed on two years of supervised probation and ordered to comply with Greene County Children Services, according to Fairborn Municipal Court records.

Hill was cited after Adorian was found wandering around May 8 on Bell Pepper Court. The boy was 26 months old, according to a police report.

Hill and her children were living at an apartment at 1516 Bell Pepper at the time.

A neighbor saw Adorian walking around as she was getting her children ready for school. The neighbor called police about 8:40 a.m.

As police were taking custody of the boy, Gray drove up and identified herself as the boy’s maternal grandmother. Police accompanied Gray to Hill’s apartment, but no one was home, the report said.

Gray then called Hill on her cellular phone and Hill came back to the apartment. She admitted that she left the boy alone, according to the report.

Hill pleaded guilty to endangering children on July 13, but was told to complete the Children and Family First program. If she did, the charge would be amended to disorderly conduct, a fourth-degree misdemeanor. She was told to return to court on Sept. 24, 2009 for final disposition, according to court records.

Hill did not appear for that court date, nor did she appear after it was re-scheduled for Oct. 29. When she did appear, on Nov. 2, she pleaded guilty to the original charge, not the amended one, according to court records. In addition to the probation, she was fined $100 and ordered to get a mental health assessment, according to court records.
